Grant:

Emily Adams (Halvor Adams III, '79)
Emily is freshman at Stony Brook University in New York where she is a proud member of the prestigious Honors College.  She plans to major in applied mathematics and at this stage hopes to pursue a path towards the actuary field.  In her short time at Stony Brook Emily has already made a remarkable impact, including making the Dean's list, receiving the Presidential scholarship, and becoming an active member of both the Organization of Actuarial Students and the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program.  This summer she has a unique opportunity to work in the laboratory of Dr. Sharon Pochron where she will study the effect of environmental toxins on earthworm mortality and fertility.  This research is being actively followed by the farm and timberland community because of its direct relation to productivity. Emily is excited to use her mathematics and modeling skills in a very real world environment this summer.  The Beta Iota Grant will allow her to pursue this exciting opportunity and we wish her the best of luck.  Emily is excited to share her experience with the Foundation so be sure to check back at the end of the summer!

Scholarships:

Paxton Duff (Don Ryan Duff, '82)
Paxton currently attends Saint Xavier High School in Louisville Kentucky and will graduate this May.  An avid golfer, Paxton played all four years for his high school, and due to his leadership on the course was named Captain for his senior year.  He plans to continue his success as a student-athlete next fall, playing on the golf team at Centre College. He has many academic accomplishments including the Principal’s list for outstanding academics, a National Merit Finalist and a member of both the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society.  His academic plan for the next four years includes majoring in both Spanish and Statistics. Paxton has also been an active member of the community and received an award from his high school recognizing his outstanding service. He tutors younger students in Spanish and volunteers his time across numerous charitable organizations.  He also spends time coaching JV and 8th grade basketball, which has been an extremely rewarding leadership experience for him. We wish Paxton the best of luck at Centre College next fall!

Thaddeus Ellis (Peter Ellis, '81)
Thaddeus “Thad” Ellis, a freshman at the University of Texas at Austin, hails from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Thad is pursuing his Bachelor of Sciences in geology, and maintains a 3.4 grade point average, which is certainly impressive in light of his challenging course load that includes chemistry and calculus courses.

Thad’s dedication to his education and a career in geology is rivaled only by his dedication to serving his community.  He is a member of the Texas Iron Spikes, a male service, spirit, and fraternal organization at the University of Texas, which supports both the University and its surrounding community.  Notably, Thad has completed close to 55 hours of community services just during the 2013-2014 academic year.  In his fall semester, he worked a twice-weekly event called Feed my People in which he cooked and served breakfast to homeless individuals in the Austin area.  He also helped to run the Special Olympics Texas bowling competition at a bowling alley close to the University.  We know that Thad will continue to set a positive example for his fellow students and throughout his community, and are proud that he is now a member of the Beta Iota Foundation's growing network of leaders and scholars.

Carlisle Hodge (Malcolm Hodge, '88)
Carlisle Hodge, from Portland, Oregon, will be attending the University of Oregon - Robert D. Clark Honors College this fall. A senior at Cleveland High School, Carlisle is a full IB Diploma Student and ranks at the top of her class of 374 students. In addition to her academic excellence, Carlisle is actively involved in a wide variety of leadership and service activities. She is the Student Body President at Cleveland High, serves as Team Captain for both the Varsity Basketball and Lacrosse Teams, and is a Member of the Oregon Model UN. Carlisle is involved in her church's youth group and volunteers as a summer camp counselor at YMCA's Camp Collins, partnering with organizations that provide art classes to children with terminal illnesses and books to children in underprivileged school districts. We are excited and wish Carlisle the best of luck at Oregon this fall and beyond.

Callum Mahoney (Andrew Mahoney, '89)
Calum will graduate from Champlain Valley Union High School and will attend McGill University in the fall. An active hiker, Callum attended the National Outdoor Leadership School where he spent two weeks learning technical outdoor skills, leadership, and environmental ethics while backpacking through the Adirondack Mountains. Inspired by Jonas Salk, the virologist who developed the first successful polio vaccine, Callum plans to major in a scientific field and hopes to one day use his education to help others. The Beta Iota Foundation is proud to help people like Callum with their college education. We wish Callum the best of luck next year!

Declan Murphy (Thomas Murphy, '83)
Declan Murphy, a current senior at Osbourn High in Manassas, Virginia will graduate in June 2014 and will be attending Fordham University starting in the Fall. He aspires to a degree in political science or journalism, and eventually would like to pursue a masters degree. During his senior year at Osbourn High he’s been involved in leadership positions in a number of activities including co-captain of the Academic Team and Vice President of the Thespian Honor Society – and graduates with an exemplary academic record at the very top of his class. Declan has been formally recognized as a National Merit Finalist, an outstanding student in math, Latin and English and a first place winner in the American Math Competition.
