2013 Scholarship and Grant Winners

The Foundation is proud to announce the winners of the 2013 Scholarship and Grant.  Nine excellent candidates will receive awards in 2013 and each is listed below with a short bio.

The 2013 scholarship and grant awards are the third successful year of giving direct to students.  $45,000 was awarded, bringing the Beta Iota Foundation's total giving to $165,000.

Grants:
Emily Ellis (Keefe Ellis '78)
Emily Ellis, a rising senior at Penn State University, will graduate in May 2014 with a BS in Food Science.  Emily is currently interning at Nestle, in the company's prepared foods division, and has also interned in the beverage unit at Campbell's Soup Company.  Beyond maintaining a stellar academic record, being actively involved in the Penn State Food Science Club, and receiving two awards within Penn State's College of Agriculture, Emily has also volunteered over 260 hours at the Children's Institute of Pittsburgh.  After graduation, Emily's goals include working as a product developer and food scientist at an international food company and attending business school.


John "Jake" Ellis (Keefe Ellis '78) 
Jake Ellis just completed his first year at The University of Virginia where he has become an active member of the school and community.  Jake is a member of the McIntire Investment Institute where he is part of a group that manages a portfolio of over $500,000.  His sense of community involvement is strong, from a group called "Untucked" from his high school days to the Men's Program for One in Four at UVA.  He is currently pursuing opportunities in both medicine as well as finance as he narrows down his career path over the course of the next year.  Jake is a brother in Phi Gamma Delta fraternity where he finished pledging this spring.  The Foundation is excited to see Jake continue his excellent work at the University for three more strong years.  


Mary Stoney (Robert Stoney '82)
Mary just completed her first year at UVA where she has become highly involved in the University and its community.  She volunteers extensively at Pause for Paws where she raises money for the SPCA.  Mary is a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority where she is active in raising money and awareness for different philanthropies that fight domestic violence.  Finally she is a part of the ski team and different intramural soccer teams in addition to maintaining an excellent academic record.  Mary is the first winner of the Beta Iota Grant to be used for a study abroad program: She is spending her summer in Costa Rica where she is immersing herself in the Spanish language and Latin culture.  She hopes to use this summer as a springboard into her study of Women's Gender studies in the Latin culture as it pertains to the Law.  Mary is currently planning a career in the legal field.  The Foundation is extremely excited to support Mary in her pursuit of her career and educational goals both at UVA and beyond.  Please be sure to check back after the summer for an update on her experience in Costa Rica.  


Scholarships:
Trevor Atkins (JT Atkins '79)
Trevor Atkins will graduate from the Haverford School in Haverford, Pennsylvania and will attend Georgetown University this fall.  Trevor has been extremely active in service at school and in the community, serving in organizations such as Peer Counseling and Community Awareness.  He plays soccer, baseball, and is captain of the basketball team, all while maintain a perfect academic record.  He has strived to take on leadership roles not only in sports but at Camp Tecumseh during his summer breaks, where he has become an inspirational leader.  The Beta Iota Foundation wishes Trevor the best of luck at Georgetown this fall.

Wilson Brace (Glenn Brace '83)
Wilson Brace grew up in Egham, Surrey in England where he will graduate from the ACS Egham International School.  He will receive his IB diploma and finish as the number 1 ranked student in his class academically.  Additionally Wilson is incredibly active in music and is a student leader of a number of school ensembles.  He will be attending Duke University this fall where he plans to study a variety of subjects including the hard sciences as well as possible minor in music.  He hopes to pursue a career in medicine and will call upon his experiences in Mongolia at the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital where he learned that the connection between science, spirit and belief play a vital role in the medical field.  We wish Wilson the best of luck as he pursues his goals at Duke next year.


Taylor Barr (David Barr '85)
Taylor Barr hails from Marietta, Georgia and will be a first year at the University of Virginia next year.  An aspiring leader, Taylor was a part of his school's student government almost from the day he entered high school and served as student body president his senior year.   As a member of the Cobb County chamber of commerce youth leadership he worked with mayors of cities in the suburbs of Atlanta and saw firsthand how many leaders want to make positive impact in the community above all else.  Taylor's personal leadership style has evolved to place the most importance on listening, understanding, planning.  We are excited to see Taylor bring his hard work and remarkable leadership to the Grounds in Charlottesville for the next four years.  


Harrison Grinnan (Thomas Grinnan '90) 
Harrison Grinnan will graduate from the Governor's School in Richmond, Virginia and will be attending Virginia Tech this fall.  Harrison may be the most interesting and diverse mathematician we know, as his current work at VCU's center for biology complexity where he is investigating the measures of centrality in network theory shows.  In high school he has led in a number of capacities, including math modeling mentoring as well as leading a robotics team of over 50 students to build a robot.  He will be pursuing a degree in mathematics, which he hopes to use in the pharmaceutical industry to improve the success rate of drug development.  We wish him the best of luck in the years to come.

David Drake Leonard (David Leonard '82)
Drake will be one of three scholarship winners attending The University of Virginia this fall.  He attended Oakton High School in Vienna, Virginia where he was an active member of the Young Entrepreneur's club as well as Future Investors of America.    Additionally he played varsity lacrosse and was incredibly active in the service organizations Leo's Club and the National Honor Society, the later of which can thank Drake for countless hours of college coaching for students who had not previously planned on working on a post high school education.  He hopes to study genetics and biotechnology as well as the social, medical, legal and ethical issues associated with the ever increasing human life span.  We wish him the best of luck next year at UVA. 


Abigail Simon (Alexander Simon '73)
Abigail Simon is from Richmond, Virginia, and graduated from the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School in June 2013. During that time, Abigail was very active with “We the People,” the school’s constitutional debate team. Following her team’s second place national finish in her junior year, Abigail returned to “We the People” during her senior year, this time as a coach for the “We the People” team at Lucille Brown Middle School, also in Richmond, Virginia. Abigail spent all four years of high school helping design costumes for Maggie Walker theater shows, including serving as co-head of costuming for Maggie Walker’s spring musical. Additionally, she served as a tutor for underprivileged youths through the Newtowne Tutoring Program. Abigail plans on attending the College of William & Mary this fall, where she hopes to study history in order to pursue a career in teaching history at either the high school or college level. Abigail’s father, Alexander Simon, was a member of the Beta Iota Chapter of Delta Tau Delta, and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1973.
